Snow-shoeing on the top of the mountain

How many times have I boasted to colleagues and friends from other regions that “in Friuli there is everything: with just over an hour's drive you can be at the seaside or in the mountains!”

The region’s attractions are so close and full of offers that among all the proposed activities it can happen that even the Locals miss something and it is precisely how this time I got involved in a new experience: snow-shoeing!
The Sunday morning alarm was not kind to everyone, but it was certainly not an impediment for the 15 brave people who decided to share this experience with us, and we met on time at the Ravascletto Infopoint, from which we left for the top of Monte Zoncolan led by the expert mountain guide Riccardo Del Fabbro.

After a quick climb to the top with the help of the cable car and a quick review of the geography of our mountains, the time came to put our boots in the snowshoes and go, towards the dairy hut and beyond!
We started by taking a few steps over a flat stretch to get familiar with our snowshoes, but immediately we found ourselves experiencing the descent, and what a descent!

Between us and the dairy hut there was a strong difference in height, and to increase the adrenaline of the experience Riccardo opened the way for us along a path that alternated climbs and descents with a splendid white landscape surrounding us. There was not a lot of snow and it alternated with icy areas, and with the spirit of an unlikely but close-knit group we overcame our fear and soon reached our goal. Just the time to stretch our legs and we started to climb again: the benevolent weather and the warm day encouraged us to get rid of our jackets, the view was special and the descents got steeper... but not to worry, for the less intrepid there was the option of going downhill on their backsides!

What did we learn? That snowshoes really allow you to go everywhere and offer a very different experience from skiing. However, this activity is not to be underestimated and be taken lightly, it is best to rely on expert guides that can select the best routes and avoid accidents - but a well assorted company and the desire to face new challenges are always the main ingredients for a splendid Sunday spent on the mountains of our region!
